Dr. M L Saraf is the savior of the poor

Born in city of dreams, Kolkata in 1947, Dr. M L Saraf had his upbringing in the financial capital of India, Mumbai. He had an inclination to study medicine right since childhood. Mind you, he had the aptitude to succeed in every possible field, be it science, commerce, or arts. This boy has never come second in any competitive examination he has attended until date. Naturally, a majority of such brilliant people take to the scientific fields of engineering and medicine. Dr. M L Saraf chose the medical profession because he had a deep rooted desire to serve the poor and underprivileged people of his country. Truly, this is a noble intention. Can there be a nobler profession than medicine under such circumstances? The answer has to be in the negative.

Having studied medicine at the G S Seth Medical College in Mumbai, he attended the KEM Hospital to complete his internship. His life changed during this period. A compassionate personality, he could not bear to see the sufferings of the poor villagers thronging the hospital for treatment to their orthopedic woes. He realized that the traveling from their villages to the hospital was a nerve wracking experience for them. He also learned that that for one patient who does make the trip to Mumbai, there could be ten others who are unable to do so. This ignited the spark of social service in this affable doctor.

To give proper direction to his dreams of serving the poor, he went to the University of Liverpool to complete his Masters in the subject. It can surprise you that he stood first in every exam in the UK as well. In fact, he won a gold medal for his academic achievements. In addition, he was the proud recipient of the Normal Roberts Award for presenting the best thesis on the subject. He was the first Indian to win the Award in the past sixty years since its inception. With these qualifications and recognition, he could have easily stayed back in the UK and followed a lucrative practice. However, Dr. M L Saraf had something else in mind. The images of the poor villagers struggling to climb the steps of the KEM Hospital returned to haunt him. He returned to India to pursue his passion.

On coming back to India, he started practicing at the KEM and Seth G S medical Hospital. He learned that the poor villagers find it tough to travel to Mumbai because of their poverty. He decided to visit their villages on a weekly basis and offer the treatment at their doorstep. In this way, he would be able to cater to a higher number of needy patients. True to his word, he set up medical camps at these villages every week where he and his team started treating the poor. Dr. M L Saraf thus became a household name in these villages. They started revering him as God. Of course, the poor people saw a savior in Dr. M L Saraf, one who has come to alleviate their sufferings.

M L Saraf had the sole ambition to catering to the poor and the underprivileged

Medicine is a passionate field. The practicing doctors need to have tremendous patience and a heart filled with compassion. Usually, you find most of the doctors having this quality. Dr. M L Saraf goes one step ahead in this matter. He takes extreme joy and satisfaction in serving the poor and the underprivileged. It is very difficult to find a doctor with this degree of compassion.

Dr. M L Saraf had a distinguished educational background in the sense that he stood first in every competitive examination he appeared in his life. This includes his school, college, as well as his medical career. In fact, he got the gold medal from every institute where he was a student. He is the first Indian in 60 years to get the Norman Roberts Prize for the best thesis during his stay at the University of Liverpool.

In addition to these academic awards he has won a host of others as well. They include a lot of awards from welfare organizations and even from the Rajasthan State Government. However, he considers the joy and satisfaction in the eyes of his patients as his biggest awards. His patients, especially the children, love and adore him tremendously. They see a divine incarnate in him.

When he was a student at the Seth G S Medical College, he did his internship from the KEM Hospital in Mumbai. He saw the plight of the poor people from the villages struggling with orthopedic problems such as polio. This strengthened his resolve to major in orthopedics. He had a burning desire to ease the problems of these children and villagers. This desire made him go to the UK and study orthopedic problems in pediatrics. His thesis won him great acclaim at the University of Liverpool. They offered him the chance to stay back in their country. He refused as he had some other plans in mind. He wanted to serve his motherland and take care of the poor and the underprivileged.

On his return to India, he pledged that he would devote his maximum time for the service of the poor. He enrolled at the same KEM Hospital and started treating the poor. Gradually, he started developing friendly relations with them. This made him realize their plight of travelling long distances from the outskirts of Mumbai to the heart of the city. Hence, he decided to conduct medical camps in their villages. Such camps could cater to the patients from the nearby villages as well. There was an issue of affordability of the medical treatment. The polio patients require calipers to strengthen their feet and provide balance to the body. These items were expensive. Hence, M L Saraf sought the assistance of his philanthropic friends from the rich society. He induced them to donate for good causes. Trusting his word, they started donating money thereby enabling him to arrange for the medical treatment for these underprivileged kids. Hence, he was nothing sort of a messiah for these poor villagers from the outskirts of Mumbai city.

Dr. M.L.Saraf has a great social side to his personality as well

Introduction:

Dr. M L Saraf exhibits a generous personality. Very difficult to find people like him, M L Saraf would feel at home treating the poor children in rural Maharashtra and Rajasthan. He has a great love for doing social service. The spark was there in his character right since the days he was an intern at the KEM Hospital in Mumbai. This spark was the main reason that prevented him from residing in London. In fact, he would have been a big success in London as well. However, he chose to serve his motherland.

All are equal

One of the best traits of M L Saraf is that he treats every patient with the same amount of respect, love, and affection. It does not matter whether the patient is the President of the US or a small poor boy from a nondescript village in Maharashtra. He understands the difficulties the poor people have to go through in life to seek medical treatment. He has an aim of eradicating the dreaded polio from India.

Tremendous figures

Until date, he might have operated upon more than 20000 patients. Out of this number, the poor would constitute more than 85%. Imagine his workload. During his 40 years in the profession, the ratio works out to more than one and a half operations per day. This is a tremendous figure considering the fact that he is a professor, researcher, and medical practitioner all rolled into one.

Love for children

He has a special love for children. This is evident in the number of operations he has conducted on children. Having organized a number of camps in the rural belt of Maharashtra, he calls upon his contacts among the rich people and arranges for the calipers etc for fitting onto these children.

He is a specialist as far as fitting people with the Jaipur foot are concerned. The Jaipur foot is an excellent contraption proving to be a boon for the orthopedically handicapped who have lost their limbs because of accidents or otherwise.

His social service does not end with treating the children in the rural areas of Maharashtra. He transcends geographical borders as well. He has done many such camps in Rajasthan as well. The Mumbai police force organizes a health awareness camp every year. Dr. M L Saraf is a regular volunteer at these camps. The poor slum-dwellers of Mumbai city can avail free treatment from one of the most illustrious sons of the soil, Dr. M L Saraf.

M L Saraf has a dream where he envisages every child in India would one day be able to walk on his or her two legs without the support of a third person. Going by the present trends, that day should definitely not be far enough. It should take a tremendous amount of self-sacrifice to be able to devote so much time to the welfare of the poor.

Final thoughts:

He is a true messiah of the poor in every sense of the word.
